Explore Rio de Frades & the Arouca Geopark

Peregrinus sits in the heart of Rio de Frades, within the Arouca Geopark – a landscape of mountains, rivers, waterfalls, forests and a fascinating mining heritage.

Trails & Mountains

Rio de Frades is connected to several mountain walking routes through forests, valleys, streams and former mining areas. The PR6 Caminho do Carteiro is a 7 km linear route that starts in Rio de Frades, while the PR8 Rota do Ouro Negro is a 6 km linear route between Fuste and Rio de Frades, centred around the area’s former tungsten mines. Both trails are within minutes of Peregrinus.

Rivers & Waterfalls

The Frades River and its tributary streams run through the valleys around Rio de Frades, creating clear pools, waterfalls and natural swimming areas. The river is also known for canyoning, with Rio de Frades offering several canyoning routes through its rocky river valleys. Along the walking routes, streams and waterfalls form an important part of the landscape and the area’s natural heritage.

Mining Heritage

Rio de Frades has a significant tungsten mining heritage dating back to the early 20th century. During the Second World War, German and British mining interests operated just a few kilometres apart, at Rio de Frades and Regoufe, and remarkably coexisted peacefully here while their countries were at war elsewhere in Europe. The remains of the former mines and mining structures can still be seen around the valley.
